A New York Times article says scientists find water vapor in Mars soil as NASA's Phoenix Mars lander did some soil analysis and found water vapor from the alkaline soil composition with a pH level around 8 to 9. That's a little too much for human skin, but it would be a habitable place for plants like asparagus. Details is available at here.
